【 F1's First Winged Competitor 】

The Lotus Type 78 F1 race car etched its name into history books as a pioneer competition winged Formula One vehicle.

Unveiled during the inaugural race of the 1977 F1 season in Argentina, this car showcased a distinctive wedge-shaped body coupled with inverted wings reminiscent of an aircraft, resulting in a notable increase in downforce. This innovative design transformation markedly enhanced the car's handling and overall performance. Beyond its reduction in air resistance, the concept was embraced for its potential to amplify tire grip, consequently enabling more forceful and swifter cornering manoeuvres.

In that same year, the driver duo of Mario Andretti and Gunner Nilsson took the helm of this groundbreaking F1 Lotus racing machine. Andretti secured victory in the U.S. West, Spanish, French, and Italian Grand Prix events, while Gunner Nilsson claimed the Belgian Grand Prix. During the first half of the 1978 season, the Team Lotus revival was boosted by the Type 78.
