SANTA MARIA CARAVEL HISTORY: BUILD YOUR OWN MODEL

Explore the history behind the Santa Maria, a wooden replica of the largest and foremost among the trio of caravels employed by Christopher Columbus during his inaugural voyage to the New World in 1492. Crafted at the shipyards of Colindres, this vessel stands as the singular member of the expedition that did not return from its journey, remaining stranded north of the island of La Española.

Setting sail from the Port of Palos on August 3rd, 1492, under the command of the Santa Maria, the expedition encountered ill fortune. Following their discovery, circumstances led the ship to be stranded during the highest tide of the year off the northern coast of Haiti. Swiftly realising the impossibility of salvaging the vessel as the water level receded by approximately 10 centimetres, the crew took action upon receiving the initial alerts and commands. The ship's cargo and a portion of its wood were repurposed to establish the first European settlement in the Americas.

Santa Maria Model Ship

Build your own 1:65 scale model of the Santa Maria caravel, a Columbus flagship 1492 model of the expedition that uncovered the Americas. The assembly approach, utilising a false keel and frames, closely mirrors the design of the actual ship.

The Artesania Latina Santa Maria model kit comprises precision-cut wooden panels, brass and cast iron components, as well as hand-stitched sails that are ready for installation. The comprehensive, step-by-step colour instructions provided in four languages will guide your assembly process, complemented by full-scale drawings showcasing the finished wooden vessel.

Enhance your collection of caravels by getting this iconic Santa Maria 1492 Model Ship and add it to the collection of ships that Columbus used in his exploration of the Americas.
