The 1985 James Hardie 1000 was the first time Australian touring car racing had run under International Group A regulations.
This meant that the Aussie cars were matched up against high performance rivals such as the big V12 Jaguar XJS’s, powerful V8 Mustangs, Rover Vitesses and BMW 635CSi’s.
By many, the Commodores were considered an outside chance at best to perform well but Brock defied the odds and contributed a magnificent drive in his 05 VK Commodore which, with three laps to go saw him running a strong second.
Unfortunately, a broken timing chain put an end to the hopes of the Holden faithful and 1985 became the worst Bathurst result in history for Holden.
However, Brock’s drive in this car will be remembered as one that was so close to becoming a history making performance.
