The Enola Gay is a B-29 Superfortress bomber aircraft by Boeing. It is named after Colonel Paul Tibbets, the mother of pilot Enola Gay Tibbets. During the latter phases of World War II, it was flown by Tibbets and Robert A. Lewis. It became the first aeroplane to drop an atomic bomb in battle on August 6, 1945.

The B 29 Bomber Enola Gay took part in the second nuclear attack as a weather reconnaissance aircraft for the principal target of Kokura. The bomb, codenamed "Little Boy," was fired at the Japanese city of Hiroshima and destroyed roughly three-quarters of the city. As a result of clouds and drifting smoke, Nagasaki's backup target was bombed instead.
