The Tornado Gr.4 emerged from a collaborative effort involving Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom to create a high-performance multi-role combat aircraft. The primary objective was to design a cutting-edge aircraft capable of executing low-altitude penetrating strike missions.
To fulfil this requirement, they developed a twin-engine combat aircraft featuring a variable-sweep wing. The British Royal Air Force introduced the initial version known as the Tornado IDS (Interdictor / Strike), designated as GR.1. In 1996, significant upgrades brought the Tornado to the Gr.4 standard, marked by enhanced operational capabilities, upgraded avionics systems for navigation, and the incorporation of new onboard technologies. These advanced systems facilitated precise target identification and tracking, along with effective management of newer-generation weapons such as the GBU-12 Paveway IV bombs.
