Junkers Ju 88 A-1 ‘Battle of Britain’ was probably the most versatile German fighter plane of the Luftwaffe in World War II. It was designed in the 1930s as a ‘fast-bomber’ plane with speeds so high, other fighter planes would not be able to cross it.
At the beginning of the "Battle of Britain" it was used in the A-1 variant as a dive fighter and horizontal bomber. After initial successes, however, it increasingly fell behind against the Hurricanes and Spitfires of the Royal Air Force.
Throughout 1939-1945 the assembly line for Ju 88 was running and produced 15000 planes in this time, with many different variants for the twin engine model.
