Supermarine Walrus MK.I

Originally named the Supermarine Seagull V and belonging to the British army, the Walrus is a versatile amphibious biplane extensively used by the Royal Australian Air Force since 1935 [World War 2].

Designed for reconnaissance, air-sea rescue and maritime patrol, the Walrus featured a distinctive design with a central hull, twin floats under the lower wing and a pusher engine installed between the wings. The Supermarine Walrus was the first squadron service British aircraft that had a fully retractable undercarriage.

The Walrus’s robust design and reliable performance made it an ideal plane for rescues, spotting for naval artillery and anti-submarine duties. This made it a critical asset in the RAAF’s wartime operations. The Supermarine was then replaced by the first line of helicopters for rescue missions.
