The Nissan GT-R of 1991 came after discontinuation of the GT-R of 1973, and the introduction of the new GT-R of 1989. During this time, Nissan was competing in Group A racing with its Nissan GTS-R, but wanted to retire it for a newer generation model with better specs. Thus came the E-BNR32 chassis [more commonly known as the R32] which was designed to triumph in Group A class Racing.

Mark Skaife debuted the first r32 car during the 1990 Mallala Australian Touring Car Championships while his win at the Bathurst 1000km race from 1991 was a renowned one.
